The Shigeyoshi Matsumae Stadium in Moscow University was opened on September 1, 1989, on the campus of Moscow University, as the first full-scale stadium having artificial turf in the Soviet Union (at that time). The site is 30.000 square meters, with a full-scale field of 97.5 meters to the right and left, and 122 meters to the center. It has artificial turf for both inside and outside of the stadium, seating for 1.500 spectators, and it is equipped with a locker room, shower rooms? and other facilities. The basic design was created by the Tokai University Educational System, and the practical design and execution were by Uranitua of Yugoslavia (at that time).
The stadium was a gift by Tokai University to Moscow University, as the result of more than 20 years of exchange and friendship between Tokai University and Moscow University in exchanging students and teachers, as well as academic and cultural works since 1973. Dr. Shigeyoshi Matsumae, the founder of Tokai University, has actively been engaged in civil diplomacy to try to promotestability and peace in the world through international exchange of sports. He himself had led the way by serving as President of the International Judo federation. Dr. Matsumae believed that mutual understanding between the two superpowers, the United States of America and the Soviet Union, was inevitable for stability and peace in the world, and he tried to promote baseball, a typical American sport, among Soviet Union and Eastern European countries, as well as to promote baseball to be played at the Olympics. As a part of his effort, he proposed building a baseball stadium at Moscow University, with which he had long years of friendly exchange. His idea was supported by many graduates, parents of studenrs, and other supporters of Tokai University, which resulted in sufficent financial contributions to build a baseball stadium. Moscow University chose to praise his efforts by naming the stadium after him.
